Bassetlaw Youth Council

The young people who attended the last meeting had some fantastic ideas about transport in the local area and I’ve had an email from CAHMS asking to attend a meeting for some feedback from the Youth Council. Aimee Sharpe from Notts County Council Participation Team came to the first meeting to provide support from a Youth Parliament perspective, and Targeted Support are interested in supporting Bassetlaw Youth Council to strengthen links with young people in Bassetlaw. I think Bassetlaw Youth Council could be really positive for local young people, we just need to increase participation and ensure it’s representative of different areas in our district.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 3rd December, 6.30 pm – 8 pm in the Venetian Room at Worksop Town Hall. Young people aged 13 to 18 are encouraged to get involved and have their say on how their council is run and champion causes for the benefit of their generation.

Members of the Youth Council can expect to have hands on control, with day trips and discounts for local shops all part of being a member. We plan having meetings in Retford as well, following a similar format to Council meetings, but transport can be arranged for young people if they give us a reasonable amount of time.

Young people can contact us for more information :-

“Bassetlaw Youth Council is a great opportunity to meet new friends and get your voice heard. You don’t have to have knowledge of politics; you just have to be passionate about your area and the issues that affect you, from anything such as public transport to apprenticeships. If you don’t speak up, you won’t get heard”

Cllr Sarah Farncombe

The annual event was another huge success for the charity. It was held on the 25th March 2015 in the North Notts Community Arena. Involved in the show were over 200 young people from 15 different organisations.

Those involved made from the drawing board or customised garments, hats and bags. Also shown down the cat walk were masks, decorated umbrella’s and jewellery. An appreciated audience of over 400 thoroughly enjoyed the event and funds raised through ticket sales will go to supporting the grant giving trust of the charity.

Annual Fun Run

This took place on Sunday 10th May 2015. The weather was perfect for both running and walking and was supported by 286 participants. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning covering the distance of 10k (6 miles) through the magnificent Welbeck Estate. Some young people raised funds for their clubs through sponsorship and the charity gained much needed funds for the grant giving trust. This year the event was kindly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Worksop and the Worksop Dukeries Rotary Club. Support to the event was also given by staff from A1 Housing Services who helped with registration and the Worksop Army Cadets who took care of the comfort points on route. Everyone finished received a medal and trophies were given to the winner and runner up Junior and Senior Boy and Girl.

It is hoped that the Fun Run/Walk will take place again in 2016, a date will be confirmed later

Golf Day

The charity hosted a stableford competition at Kilton Forest Golf Course on the 13th June 2015 and received much support from many organisations within the area through entering a team or sponsoring a hole. All the prizes were kindly donated by local golf clubs. The winning team was from BPL who won a round of golf at Lindrick followed by a close second from local business Transdek who won a round of golf at Retford.  All the funds raised on the day, including hole sponsorship go to supporting the grant giving trust. FoYPiB would like to thank volunteers who helped and all involved who made this a great day despite very poor weather conditions.
